Community Matters

Mark Smith - DJ/Host

Mark has many years experience in radio and television after beginning in hospital radio, which was a great place to learn his craft. His first professional experience soon followed as he worked in commercial radio presenting the Drivetime programme across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. He then worked in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Austria.

Since being in Yorkshire Mark has worked for Great Yorkshire Radio, Yorkshire Television, Channel 4's The Big Breakfast and his production company created a national in screen radio project with Warner Cinemas. Now based in Leeds, Mark has worked for radio stations in Harrogate and York but sadly suffered with illness for many years. Fortunately, he is back doing what he loves as a volunteer with South Leeds Radio, and is delighted to be presenting his first shows for many years.

Jamie McLoughlin - Reporter

Carrying on from his time finding local stories and carrying out insightful interviews with people connected to interesting, unfolding news stories in Leeds, Film Studies graduate Jamie will be working with Mark to develop Community Matters into a great media resource for South Leeds and beyond.

John Hutchinson - DJ/Host

John started volunteering at hospital radio in Bradford in 1976, and after a few weeks training, took his first tentative on air steps. "I was very nervous to start with but soon got the hang of things and shortly after that I joined Radio SKEBA at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. For a while, myself and a friend would work Sunday mornings at SKEBA and afternoons at Westwood Hospital in Bradford. I eventually settled for just working at SKEBA before moving to Chapel Allerton Hospital and Radio Allerton (now known as Leeds Hospital Radio) in 1981 and I have been there ever since.

"Over the years I have presented a variety of shows: country, requests, oldies through to contemporary, but the one I like best is what I am now doing at LHR. It is called Sounds Good To Me and is 90 minutes of the best in pop, rock and easy listening music old and new. I re-work it slightly for South Leeds Radio and it is called South Leeds Sounds Good. I am excited to be in at the beginning of something as exciting as South Leeds Radio and I hope you like my shows."

John is also involved with SLR as the host of South Leeds Life and  will be a studio contributor to our new Community Matters show.
